H. Sevim Işık Bäro
Born and raised in northwestern Anatolia, H. Sevim Işık Bäro is a theater director, dramaturg, and independent documentary filmmaker currently based between Mannheim, Germany, and Turkey. In 1996–1997, she trained under Spanish instructors in street theater, playwriting, acting, and dance, later touring Europe with the Sandımay Street Theater troupe. She graduated from Istanbul University with a degree in Social Anthropology (2004), focusing her thesis on “Women in the Transforming Rural Landscape,” while simultaneously pursuing studies in Theater Criticism and Dramaturgy at the same faculty.
Since 1998, she has been actively directing theater and teaching performing arts to children and youth. Deeply engaged in the gender equality movement since 1999, Işık Bäro worked extensively in the television and film industry between 2004 and 2013 as a screenwriter, dramaturg, story producer, and executive producer. She has been a committee member of the International Labor Film Festival since 2013. Following her independent documentary debut in 2014, she has continued to produce independent film projects, while also contributing film reviews and essays to the Kadınİşçi (Women Laborer) platform since 2020.
Since relocating to Germany in 2017, she conducts professional workshops on media, screenwriting, dramaturgy, democracy, human rights, and diversity, while continuing her independent film and theater productions. In both her stage and cinematic work, she consistently explores themes of gender equality. Her life and artistic practice are profoundly nourished by an expansive love for trees, plants, water, rain, snow, the sea, the sun, the wind, cats, dogs, and ultimately, well-intentioned, receptive, and inquisitive minds. She is fluent in Turkish, English, and German.
